Imagine what it’s like to have such damaged and diseased teeth and gums that you're too ashamed to smile.

It’s been a rough couple of years. The pandemic has had many of us stuck in our homes for weeks on end, not being able to see our friends and family or enjoy the social freedoms we take for granted. It’s been a real strain. But thanks to the community’s vaccination uptake we look set to be able to enjoy this Christmas with friends and family, laughing and smiling once again.

Imagine what it’s like to have such damaged and diseased teeth and gums that you're too ashamed to smile.

For someone recovering from alcohol and drug addiction self-confidence is everything. To commit to change and to see it through needs a strong sense of self belief and self-worth. But what happens to that confidence, so vital to recovery, if that person feels too inhibited, too embarrassed to smile because of rotten or missing teeth?

That’s why we have partnered with First Step to help normalise oral health as part of addiction recovery. For those in the grip of addiction, unable to access mainstream oral health care, the effects can be devastating - painful decaying teeth, missing teeth, bad breath and serious gum disease. The flow on effects for general health, mental health, sociability and employability can be equally devastating. We are finding new ways to engage these patients, improve their dental health and rebuild their confidence - helping them smile again!

It’s amazing how important and powerful research can be.

This Christmas, as you are once again in the company of family and friends - smiling and laughing - I urge you to think of those that are recovering from addiction. People without the confidence to smile.
